Making the Right Decision

So, you're considering the choice between renovating a living space or adding a small extension to your home - but you're not quite sure what to do ...

Many Sydney builders and home improvement companies can show you the alternatives available, but one Sydney builder says that you can do both options cost effectively and efficiently.

According to award-winning builder Ian Cubitt from Classic Home Improvements, an additional room should match the home's internal design creating a 'flow-through' effect.

"When you add an extension to a home, you must consider the impact it will make between the existing home and the new space," he said.

"We recommend that the style of the extension flows back into the original home to minimise visual impact or clashing with the home's existing decor."

This can be achieved with extending flooring materials from the extension into the home, and by widening the entry from the home into the extension, window treatments and walls.

"Reducing the visual impact between the new extension and the original home creates a greater aesthetic value and makes the extension a natural progression of the original home," Ian said.

However, Ian recommends that your builder should be able to demonstrate experience in such renovations.

"It is important that the builder has a strong track-record in ground-floor extensions and is able to offer a range of extension options."

"

Glass rooms, conservatories, space makers and even screened enclosures are options that can be considered."

"Installing a small extension is a relatively simple process for most builders. What is important, is the fact that the builder must consider the architecture of the original home's internal and external features." Ian said.

He always recommends that homeowners considering such extensions or home improvements should develop a clear understanding between themselves and their builder.

"Always ensure that channels of communication are clear. The builder must understand what the homeowner wants and expects, and the homeowner must understand a builder's terms and conditions, including price," he said.

"During the initial consultation, homeowners should explain to the builder what they want, how it is to be used and the look they expect."

"In most circumstances the builder will then present one or a number of layouts to the homeowner for discussion prior to finalising all arrangements, including a confirmed price," Ian said.

Ian Cubitt's Classic Home Improvements has a successful track record of home renovation and extension with a large range of home improvement options available to the homeowner.
