Room to breathe

In summer, depending on the style of your home, you can invite the outdoors in, simply by throwing open a few doors and windows.

You can also eat alfresco on a balcony or backyard patio and take in the scenery.

In winter though, most of us shut the windows, bolt the doors and hide ourselves away from chilly winds, waiting silently for the time when we can enjoy the outdoors again.

Then there are those with glass rooms in their homes - which can be used to create an outdoor environment indoors - they can enjoy outdoor views and atmosphere year-round, from the warm, or cool, comfort of their extended home.

According to home improvement specialist Ian Cubitt, many homeowners opting to extend or renovate choose glass rooms to add extra space and value to the home.

But, he emphasised that homeowners should consider a number of criteria before actually selecting a style of glass room for installation.

"Consider the transition point, which is the space between the home and the outdoors, then consider the range of uses for the room," he said.

Many of Ian's past customers have installed glass rooms for dining areas, rumpus rooms, studies or lounge areas, particularly in areas where they want to take advantage of their panoramic views.

If contemplating a glass room addition Ian suggested; "First and foremost, the current home's architectural style must be considered. Colours, style, finishes and glazing material must suit the home's current style."

He pointed out that the range of glazing options and framing systems available can give glass rooms greater functionality than ever before, but that these need to be used effectively.

"Today's modern glazing materials can filter the sun's light and UV rays," he said.

"If there is too much sun, we would recommend a solid roofing material combined with ventilation options to keep the room cool during summer months and warmer during winter."

More than 20 years of experience and several HIA Awards have given Ian Cubitt's Classic Home Improvements an edge when it comes to glass rooms, conservatories and home extensions. Now is the time to arrange a glass room addition to enjoy this winter.
