Bring the outside inside

For most homes, the link between the internal environment and the outside is a simple door - there is rarely a transition point.

With more home owners opting to extend or renovate homes, a glass room can offer this transition point, and add extra space and value to the home.

As it sounds, a glass room extension can create an outdoor environment in an enclosed space.

According to Ian Cubitt, managing director of Classic Home Improvements, builders and home owners must consider a number of criteria before they actually select a style of glass room for installation.

"First and foremost, the current home's architectural style must be considered," he said.

"You must also consider the transition point - the space between the home and the outdoors - then consider the range of uses for the room."

Glass rooms are ideal for homeowners who want to take advantage of a panoramic view, he said.

But the most popular reason for a glass room is to bring the outdoors inside.

Mr Cubitt says aspect plays a major role in material selection.

"If the glass room has long periods of exposure to the sun it can become very uncomfortable and furniture can be exposed to direct sunlight, causing fading," he said.

"The use of a range of glazing options and frame systems gives the home owner greater choice than ever before."

Ian Cubitt's Classic Home Improvements has more than 20 years experience and several HIA Awards for glass rooms, conservatories and home extensions.
