Owner Ian Cubitt believes that the state government's decision to maintain current stamp duty levels on home purchases has made the home improvement industry even stronger.

"Home owners usually move to a new home because they need extra space," Mr Cubitt said.

"But for the same price of stamp duty, many people can extend or renovate their homes."

Mr Cubitt is concerned that with the rapid growth of home improvements many single and small building operations are trying to muscle into the industry.

"The recent collapse of various insurance companies left many home owners out in the cold because many small builders were inadequately covered," Mr Cubitt said.

"This is why people intending to renovate or build additions need to check that builders are adequately insured, have successful track records and solid reputations."
